Axel Springer provides Consent and Transparency Software for the launch of GDPR under a free open source license

To press release overview

Software enables GDPR-compliant handling of tracking technologies for personalized offers across Europe / BurdaForward becomes first cooperation partner

With entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on May 25th, 2018, new requirements for the use of cookies and other tracking technologies will take effect. Axel Springer has developed the Opt-in and Transparency Layer (OIL) software that meets these new requirements and will enable the legally compliant personalization of content and advertising offers in the future.

The OIL software will be made available in mid-June 2018 as an open source license and can be used in both opt-in and opt-out scenarios, depending on the legal bases in the respective EU member states. According to the opinion of Axel Springer, the use of tracking technologies in Germany continues to be allowed without prior consent, as long as users can opt-out.

Since all publishers are faced with the new regulatory framework starting on May 25th, Axel Springer has decided to release a beta version on May 23, 2018. The first application partner of the OIL software will be the marketer Burda Forward, who will implement the open source solution in its online offerings.

Moritz Holzgraefe, Chief Operating Officer Corporate Digital Platforms at Axel Springer: Instead of leaving the field to the dominant US platforms, we want to work with the European publishing and advertising industry to develop coherent standards that benefit the entire ecosystem. Thats why we offer our software under a free open source license the more companies participate in this project, the better.

Martin Lütgenau, Managing Director BurdaForward Advertising: We welcome the initiative of Axel Springer and support the project. We will implement the 'Opt-in and Transparency Layer' in the brands of BurdaForward, setting another milestone in our Goodvertising strategy.

The OIL software supports the framework established by the International Advertising Bureau Europe, which develops industry-wide standards for the utilization of user data.
